I looked out the window and saw this lone group of trees after most of the area had been cleared to build a parking lot. I'm glad this little family group was left.

Plein air, 9x12 oil on panel. This is a beautiful day! It started out cloudy and I was afraid my plein air painting trip to SFA University's arboretum would be a wash out. But I met my friend, Karen Lostrocco there and the sun came out and we painted most of the afternoon. The dogwood and azaleas and many other trees and flowers are blooming and it is a beautiful place. It was almost 80 degrees--feels like spring.

Plein air, 9x12, oil on canvas on panel. This is the first painting I did when I went to Port Aransas on a paint out with the Outdoor Painters Society in November. The day was cloudy and very windy. It was difficult to keep everything from blowing away. We found a windbreak and painted in Aransas Pass that afternoon.

Oil on canvas, 16"x20". Here is another painting that's in my show at the Museum of East Texas (936) 639-4434. I painted this from a photo I took in Illinois. Last summer, I took my dad and went to Woodstock, Illinois, for my niece's wedding. Woodstock is about an hour northwest of Chicago. On our way home, in central Illinois, it had been raining and was just beginning to clear from the left. You can still see the rain on the right side of the picture.

Oil on panel, 12"x9", Plein Air painting. We went to the Rio Grande Valley to visit my sister-in-law for New Years. This is a painting I did about a block from her house in La Feria. I liked the design of the shadows on the side of the building, so I set up my easel and painted this. It was a beautiful, sunny day about 80 degrees.

I hope all of you had a wonderful and blessed Christmas! I've been very busy getting ready for my museum show and, then, getting ready for Christmas. Now that the show has opened and Christmas is over, maybe I can get back to painting every day. I didn't post very often the past few months because I was mostly painting for my show and I didn't want to post the paintings until the show had opened.

We had an elegant opening at the Gala on Dec. 11 at the Museum of East Texas. It is a 4-person show. I am planning to post some of my paintings that are in the show. This is one of them.

Plein Air 6x8 oil on canvas on panel. Our neighborhood had garage sales this weekend and I enjoyed painting in between shoppers. What caught my attention here was the contrast of the bright light outside the garage and the cool shade inside. It was a very pleasant day. The weather here in Texas has cooled off enough to be comfortable in the shade. Thank goodness, the 100 degree days are over for a while!

I just returned from a trip to northern Illinois for my niece's wedding. I took my dad with me and it was a great trip--I drove about 2000 miles round trip. I took my paints, hoping to find time to paint en plein air, but, that didn't happen. I did take pictures, though, and I hope to be able to paint tomorrow. A bad case of poison oak has taken me over and I'm waiting for medication from my doctor. Obviously, he doesn't have poison oak or I wouldn't still be waiting... I think it's leprosy...ooooh!

OPS Paint Out:
I'm leaving at 6:00 AM tomorow for an Ennis/Waxahachie paint out with the OPS (Outdoor Painters Society), just south of Dallas. The OPS is a great group of people whom I enjoy painting with. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we'll be able to paint the beautiful scenery including bluebonnets, our Texas state flower. Plein air painting--I enjoyed sitting outside and painting my bike after I rode it this morning. It's such a beautiful, sunny, warm spring day. How wonderful it is to be able to paint! I painted this yesterday afternoon in my studio when the sun was on my windowsill and the azaleas were mostly in the shade. This bottle of wine was given to me by my friend because it's such a pretty bottle and remains unopened. One day, we'll open it... I used a #8 bristle flat on this, except for my signature. I always use as big a brush as possible to keep me from painting details.

Avocados are my favorite food. We eat them almost every day, so this is a normal scene in my kitchen. There were 2 light sources for this still life--the indirect light from the window on the left, and the direct incandescent light from the right. That made for an interesting study of colors and temperatures and I'm pleased with the results.

3/21/10 Almost plein air... I painted this from my hotel room window early Sunday morning. I started out the door and saw this bautiful scene, but it was about 36 degrees with a very strong wind, so I didn't paint outside, but through my window. I hated to leave this beautiful place, but I packed up my things and drove back to Lufkin--about 3 hours away.

3/19/10 plein air painting. I drove around again and found this scene, set up my easel, and painted. The beautiful weather of the morning was turning into mostly cloudy and very windy for the afternoon. the sun kept going behind the clouds and the whole scene would change. I had a wonderful morning painting at Winston Ranch en plein air on Friday! I must say that plein air painting is sometimes challenging, though. The sun was shining and it was about 55 degrees, but the wind was blowing 15-20 mph (so the weatherman says...but I think it was at least 50 mph!). I fastened down my canvas and held on to my supplies and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I had on a hooded sweater and a coat, and the wind was at my back, so I wasn't cold. I didn't really do everything I wanted to on this painting, but...

We have snow again, our third time this winter. It's really unusual for East Texas to have snow, and I'm so glad we do. This is a study I painted from a photo I took of our beautiful snow. This is a plein air painting done from my back porch of some storage buildings in my back yard. We got a rare snow last night--about 3 inches. Everything is nice and white and beautiful. I'm glad I don't live where it snows a lot, but I do like snow once or twice each winter. This is the first time I've done a plein air painting in the snow and it was a little different. My fingers got cold, even with gloves on. I'll take a better picture when the sun comes out.

My mother-in-law, the sweet little lady I painted on June 30, passed away on Jan. 22 and we were gone to the Rio Grande Valley for over a week. We've been home for several days, now, and I've been back painting the past few.

This is a study I did and I'm now working on a big painting (48"x36") of the same scene, but I'm not finished with it, yet.

I'm also needing a bigger studio. I've looked at several places to rent, but... I'm now considering building a studio--well not me building it, but having someone build it for me. I'll let you know what I decide to do.

Today is a beautiful day! It started out with a thick fog, but it lifted pretty fast. It lifted before I could get outside to paint, and there was just a little fog left in the distance when I painted this en plein air. I wanted to capture the cold, crisp morning with the warm sunshine.

I've been wanting to paint these eggs ever since I've had them and these are the last three. I really enjoyed painting them on the embroidered cloth in front of the window in my studio. I used a limited palette--only ultramarine blue, raw sienna, and white. It's a beautiful day, cold and clear. How wonderful to be able to paint!!!

I attended an OPA (Oil Painters of America) Paint Out last week in Fredericksburg, in the Texas Hill Country. I borrowed my dad's RV and had a wonderful time painting and taking photos for 5 days around the area. I got to meet many oil painters and see some beautiful country. These are all plein air paintings.

After I painted this, I realized that I had painted almost the exact scene before. I was looking through some previous paintings and, there it was--the same scene. It's a little different, but the same place. I used a palette knife for this and the paint is really thick. For some reason, I just kept piling it on. I'm not sure why.

This is a painting I did last night using a palette knife. I can get a lot more paint on the canvas with a palette knife than I can with a brush. This has a good bit of impasto.

I finally have something to post!!! I'm having a lot of trouble finding enough time to paint and finish anything. But, this is finished--I think. It's a donation for our museum fundraiser. The John James Audubon exhibition opens at the Museum of East Texas this weekend and everything donated for the auction has to be about birds.

I love humming birds! A hummingbird feeder and this dreamcatcher hang about a foot outside my kitchen window, so I watch them a lot and photograph them often. This is a Ruby Throated Hummingbird. He's guarding the feeder.

The Museum of East Texas Art Camp is over for this summer. This is the last demo I did for my students, so I thought I might as well post it, even though it's not a finished painting. I'm, now, working at the museum temporarily, filling in for the Curator of Education while she's on maternity leave. So, I'll be busy, but I think I'll have a little more time to paint than I did during Art Camp. Teaching of any type is all consuming. I've always taught--high school, college--and it takes over you life. I'm not saying teaching's bad, it's just different than other jobs. Teachers are entirely responsible for what goes on in their classroom and they must plan at home, purchase materials, take items such as still life contents with them, and pay close attention to everything and everyone at all times in their classes, then often take home papers to grade and plans to make for the next day. It's all consuming. Teaching is very difficult and stressful (if done well) and good teachers deserve more respect than they get.

It was fun painting this little flower on the window sill in my studio. I love how the light comes through the clear glass and how the colors look through the glass. The flowers came from my neighbor's yard.

I did this plein air palette knife painting yesterday afternoon in 100 degree heat! Can you tell how hot I was? I sat in the shade in front of my house and looked up at our flag waving in the breeze and painted as fast as I could. I started out in the shade, but finished with the sun on my legs and my palette, actually getting sunburned legs. I know--you're saying, "Why didn't you paint early in the morning before it got so hot???" I don't know... Anyway, here's the finished painting.

I couldn't resist painting these delicious grapes. They're so much fun to paint. If you look closely, you can see many colors and translucency in them.

My son, Russell, brought me this bunch of lillies from his garden when he came to visit over the weekend. I'm glad I took pictures of them because they don't last long. I painted them yesterday and some of them were still pretty. I looked at a photo to get the composition and the actual flowers for the colors.

This is another view of my dad's farm which I've painted from numerous locations over the years. This view is looking northwest from the pond. The house where my grandparents lived is just past the buildings you can see up on the hill. This is a beautiful and very peaceful place in every season of the year.

This beautiful little girl was a student in one of my Art Camp classes last week and I couldn't resist painting her. She was one of the youngest in the classes of ages 7-14. I used acrylics and painted very fast. As I've said many times before, I love oil paints!

This is a demo for one of my museum Art Camp acrylic painting classes. I enjoy teaching painting, especially when I get to paint, too. I bought this bouquet of flowers on the way to the museum and it was painted by students in my 4 classes today.

This is a demo I did for a group of kids at our museum Art Camp. It's an acrylic painting class that I'm teaching and they are doing some nice paintings. I don't normally use acrylics. Oils are my medium of choice, but sometimes acrylic paint has it's advantages and it's necessary in this case. I could almost call this a plein air painting, but not quite. My class area has a huge window and I painted this of the view outside the window--from inside. My students also painted their view out the window.

Mural Repair

Here's what I've been doing the past 2 days. No, not creating this mural, (I did create it 3 years ago) but cleaning and repairing it. Vandals sprayed graffiti on my mural and another mural (painted by Lance Hunter) a few blocks away. So I helped a City Parks official remove the varnish, which removed most of the graffiti. Then I had to repaint parts where some graffiti remained and put an acrylic varnish on it. I'll go back in a few days and reapply Soluvar, a removable varnish. I don't understand why people vandalize.

My neighbor, Lucille, has such pretty flowers that I've painted them many times. This morning it's very cloudy and foggy, in fact, it started sprinkling rain before I finished this. But, since it's oil paint, I went ahead and painted while it rained. A "cold front" is coming and it's only supposed to be 85 the next few days. It's been in the low 90s for the past week.

My husband is such a good painting subject! I don't know how many times I've painted him. I did this from a picture I took of him out the dining room window on Saturday. He was weeding and watering the plants (cactus) beside the mailbox.

This turned out to be rather surreal. I just sat down and quickly painted this scene in my studio and when I finished, I was surprised. It isn't how I had planned to paint it at all. I didn't really think about it or concentrate on it like I usually do.

This is a cactus type plant growing in my back yard which has pretty little bell-shaped flowers on it. The common name for it is Maternity Plant because it has little baby plants growing on the edges of the leaves. These little ones drop to the ground and grow where they land. Although sunny earlier, it's now cloudy and looking like rain here. Hope you all had a nice, patriotic Memorial Day weekend.

5/20/09 This is the painting I did yesterday (Wed). The flowers are from the same arrangement as the daisies I painted Tuesday. Sometimes it seems like I've forgotten how to paint. I'm not very happy with any of the paintings I've done this week, today's included. Maybe I will rework today's and post it--and maybe not.

This is a plein air painting done from my back yard, looking through the fence at my neighbor's yard. Lillian's flower bed, once immaculate, is now overgrown since illness forced Lillian into a nursing home. I hope the new owners will also take pride in their yard like she did, providing beauty to the neighborhood.

Gracie, my outside cat, lay on the grass beside my easel while I painted this and 2 mockingbirds fussed at her the whole time we were there. Maybe you can see my frustration with the constant noise in this painting.
